The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed that Nigeria’s aviation sector contributes $2.5 billion annually to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) while supporting more than 271,000 jobs.
According to the latest IATA assessment, the aviation industry’s contribution now represents 0.7% of Nigeria’s GDP, marking a significant rise from a previous estimate of $1.7 billion.
The sector directly employs about 39,500 professionals across airlines, airports, air navigation services, and ground handling. In addition, its wider value chain spanning suppliers, transport, and tourism supports over 217,000 indirect and induced jobs, bringing the total employment impact to 271,000.
Tourism facilitated by air travel also plays a key role, adding approximately $454 million to GDP and generating employment for more than 66,600 people.
IATA stressed that the figures highlight aviation’s critical role as a driver of economic growth, connectivity, and job creation in Nigeria. The association called for policies that can further unlock the sector’s potential, including infrastructure investment, regulatory efficiency, and an enabling business environment.
