The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has embarked on the most extensive expansion of the nation’s health workforce in over a decade. The administration recruited 14,444 health professionals across 64 federal health institutions in 2024 and has begun the hiring of another 23,059 personnel for 2025.

The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, which described the initiative as a major step in rebuilding Nigeria’s health system and addressing workforce shortages that have strained service delivery nationwide.

According to the ministry, about 78 percent of the 2024 recruits are clinical professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, and community health extension workers, while the rest are laboratory scientists, pharmacists, and other support staff. The 2025 recruitment phase aims to strengthen primary healthcare delivery, improve patient outcomes, and reduce the impact of the ongoing brain drain in the sector.

The government also confirmed the release of significant funds for outstanding salary arrears and allowances as part of its comprehensive Health Workforce Recovery Plan, which seeks to retain skilled personnel, enhance working conditions, and attract more young Nigerians into the medical profession.

Officials said the recruitment drive aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes human capital development and the strengthening of essential public services.

“This marks a new era in Nigeria’s health system. We are rebuilding not just facilities but the people who make healthcare work,” a senior ministry official said.

The recruitment exercise is ongoing across federal medical centres, teaching hospitals, and specialized health institutions nationwide.
