Buhari-Era Rail Projects Under Senate Scrutiny Over Safety, Loan Issues

The Senate has launched a full-scale investigation into railway projects executed under former President Muhammadu Buhari, citing repeated derailments and concerns over public loan usage.

The motion, sponsored by Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central), highlighted persistent technical faults on the Itakpe–Warri Standard Gauge Line, which reportedly suffered at least ten derailments between 2023 and 2025.

An ad-hoc committee led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole will probe contract awards, funding, supervision, and maintenance of all Buhari-era rail projects. The panel is expected to report back within six weeks.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the probe aims to ensure accountability and value for money, describing the situation as “a trail of waste, debt, and deception.”

The Senate also directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the Ministry of Transportation to fix safety lapses and improve services on the Itakpe–Warri corridor immediately.

Analysts say the findings could reshape oversight in Nigeria’s rail sector, particularly regarding foreign-funded infrastructure projects. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
