The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is set to unveil a comprehensive National Railway Development Roadmap aimed at connecting all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory through a modern rail network. The initiative, in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, seeks to transform Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, drive economic growth, and strengthen national connectivity.
According to the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the roadmap will grant states access to national rail corridors at no additional cost, while allowing them to develop intra-state rail systems with federal support. Lagos and Plateau States are already making progress by leveraging existing national rail infrastructure to enhance local transport services.
The plan outlines key targets including optimizing existing assets within two years, transitioning to electric-powered trains in five years, doubling rail capacity within a decade, and expanding Nigeria’s rail network to 60,000 kilometers in 20 years. Through this ambitious roadmap, President Tinubu’s administration aims to modernize transportation, boost trade and tourism, and create new jobs, reaffirming its commitment to building a more connected and industrialized nation.
