Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and former military governor of Lagos State, has revealed that top military figures once attempted to prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from becoming governor of Lagos.
Speaking in Abuja at the public presentation of Buni Boy, a book authored by the late Niyi Ayoola-Daniels, Marwa said the military hierarchy was uncomfortable with Tinubu’s strong pro-democracy role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which openly challenged military rule.
He noted that despite the pressure, the will of Lagosians prevailed, leading to Tinubu’s emergence as governor in 1999 — a moment Marwa described as significant for both Lagos and Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Marwa commended Tinubu’s resilience, saying the effort to stop him only underscored his dedication to democracy and governance. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
