Vice President Kashim Shettima has restated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to preserving and protecting traditional institutions across Nigeria, describing them as irreplaceable pillars of society.
Speaking at the 45th Anniversary celebration of the Emir of Gumel, HRH Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Sani II, and the commissioning of the Gumel Central Mosque in Jigawa State, Shettima said traditional rulers remain the closest to the grassroots and their authority outlives political administrations.
He noted that while elected officials serve a maximum of eight years, traditional institutions endure. “We must respect them, take care of them, and preserve as well as protect the institution,” he said.
The Vice President celebrated the Emir’s 45 years on the throne, praising his leadership and praying for his continued good health to witness future milestones. He also highlighted the rich history of the Gumel Emirate, founded in 1750, and commended the Emir’s track record in public service before ascending the throne.
Shettima paid tribute to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Saad Abubakar III, describing him as a symbol of unity who tirelessly builds bridges across Nigeria. He also applauded Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi for cultivating 10,000 hectares of wheat, which he said surpassed the combined output of 18 northern states.
Governor Namadi expressed gratitude to the Vice President for honouring the state’s invitation, while the Sultan emphasized unity, tolerance and mutual respect among Nigerians.
The event was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers and political leaders including Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadeija, Senator Abubakar Kyari, Hon Farouk Adamu Aliyu, Deputy Governor Aminu Usman, Speaker Haruna Dangaji and several Emirs from across the region.
