The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed, has distanced himself from a statement circulating online that was attributed to him in reaction to recent corruption allegations.
In an official clarification issued on Wednesday, Ahmed firmly rejected any association with the purported response, stressing that he neither authored nor released such a statement. He explained that the document being circulated did not originate from him in any form.
The clarification comes against the backdrop of intense public attention following allegations made by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, who accused the NMDPRA chief of corrupt practices. Among the claims were assertions that large sums of money were allegedly spent on overseas education for Ahmed’s children using questionable funds.
Without addressing the substance of the accusations directly, Ahmed stated that he was fully aware of what he described as unfounded and sensational claims targeting him and his family. He noted that, given the strategic nature of the sector he regulates, he deliberately chose to avoid public confrontations or media exchanges over the matter.
Ahmed said he welcomed the fact that the allegations had been formally submitted to an investigative body, expressing confidence that an objective review would help clarify the issues and vindicate his position. According to him, a structured investigation would allow the facts to be examined without bias or emotional influence.
The clarification was formally endorsed by Engr. Farouk Ahmed in his capacity as Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
The development follows a petition submitted by Aliko Dangote to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on December 16, requesting a full investigation into the conduct of the NMDPRA leadership. The ICPC has since acknowledged receipt of the petition and assured the public that a comprehensive inquiry will be carried out.
