
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his 92nd birthday, describing him as a global literary icon, fearless advocate of justice and one of Nigeria’s greatest national treasures.
In a goodwill message, President Tinubu praised Soyinka’s outstanding contributions to literature, culture, good governance and the defence of democracy, noting that exceptional individuals like him are rare in any generation.
The President commended Soyinka’s achievements as a playwright, novelist, poet, essayist, actor and public intellectual, recalling his historic Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 as the first African to receive the prestigious honour in the category.
Tinubu also acknowledged Soyinka’s decades-long struggle against military dictatorship and his role in the June 12 democracy movement, noting that they both stood together in the fight for democratic governance.
Describing the renowned scholar as a living repository of history, knowledge and courage, the President thanked him for his unwavering faith in Nigeria and his continued wise counsel.
President Tinubu joined Nigerians and the international community in celebrating Soyinka’s enduring influence on generations of writers, scholars and activists, wishing him many more years of good health and continued service to humanity.
