The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) is urging state governors to fully implement the Chief Medical Residency Training Act (MRTA) to regulate residency programs in Nigerian hospitals. This plea was made during a press conference after NARD’s 44th Annual General Meeting in Abeokuta, where concerns about insufficient funding for residency training, particularly in Teaching Hospitals, were highlighted. NARD President Dr. Tope Osundara emphasized that the MRTA is essential for maintaining high standards in medical training, protecting against arbitrary program suspensions by Medical Directors. He also addressed the financial burden on resident doctors, advocating for government support for both training and research. Osundara pointed to poor working conditions, inadequate pay, and heavy patient loads as factors driving doctors abroad, calling for urgent improvements to retain talent. He further stressed the need for collaborative efforts to ensure the safety of healthcare workers amid rising security threats. Key resolutions from the AGM included demands for the payment of outstanding funds and criticism of certain CMDs for harmful policies affecting doctor welfare. NARD’s leadership remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of resident doctors and addressing systemic challenges within the healthcare sector.
