Nigeria’s commanding performance in the AFCON group stage has been further validated by individual and technical honours, with Ademola Lookman named the Team of the Group Stage standout, while Eric Chelle was recognised as Coach of the Group Stage.

Lookman was instrumental to the Super Eagles’ success, delivering pace, creativity and decisive end product across the group matches. The Atalanta forward registered two goals and two assists in just two appearances, playing a key role in shaping Nigeria’s impressive run.

In its assessment released on Friday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) described Lookman as “a constant threat with his direct running, creativity and eye for goal.”

“His versatility allowed him to operate both as an attacking midfielder and a winger, while his off-the-ball movement consistently unsettled defenders. Lookman’s intelligence in exploiting pockets of space and his ability to deliver key passes at crucial moments made him one of the most dangerous players of the group stage,” CAF added.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle also earned plaudits, emerging as the Coach of the Group Stage following Nigeria’s assured displays.

“Under the guidance of Eric Chelle, the Nigerian national team demonstrated tactical discipline and a cohesive team structure. His approach was characterised by a solid defensive base, swift transitions and the freedom given to attacking players to express themselves,” CAF noted.

“Chelle’s clear vision and consistent selections enabled Nigeria to perform at a high level throughout the group stage, showcasing a well-balanced style of play. His ability to maximise the squad’s potential and forge a strong collective identity stood out as one of the highlights of the tournament,” the statement continued.

In goal, Mohamed El Shenawy marshalled a resilient defensive unit that included Noussair Mazraoui, Axel Tuanzebe, Edmond Tapsoba and Yahia Attiat-Allah, all of whom combined composure with discipline under pressure.

The midfield was defined by energy and technical quality, with Brahim Díaz dictating play creatively and Carlos Baleba excelling in transitions.

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, however, narrowly missed out on a place in the Team of the Group Stage.

Up front, the attacking trio of Riyad Mahrez, Amad Diallo and Sadio Mané delivered moments of brilliance, goals and leadership, reinforcing their status among Africa’s elite footballers.
