Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has warned that Nigeria must avoid complacency as they prepare for their 2025 AFCON round-of-16 showdown against Mozambique on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Nigeria booked their place in the knockout stage with a perfect record, claiming maximum nine points from Group C to set up a clash with Mozambique, who qualified as one of the best third-placed teams after finishing with three points.
The Super Eagles recorded wins over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group stage, while Mozambique secured progression thanks to a narrow 3–2 victory over Gabon in Group F. Although they lost to Cameroon and Ivory Coast, the Mozambicans showed resilience in those encounters.
Speaking ahead of the match in Fes, Iwobi stressed that Nigeria must approach the fixture with full commitment in their bid to reclaim the continental crown.
“We’ve won all three of our group games, but we can’t afford to relax. We have to give 100 per cent and do our country proud,” Iwobi told Ademola Victor TV.
Iwobi has played a key role in Nigeria’s campaign at the ongoing AFCON in Morocco, orchestrating play from midfield as the Super Eagles advanced to the round of 16.
The Fulham midfielder has registered two assists so far in the tournament, both coming in Nigeria’s 2–1 opening win over Tanzania. He set up Semi Ajayi’s opener before providing the assist for Ademola Lookman’s winning goal, becoming only the second Nigerian player since 2010 to record two assists in a single AFCON match.
He followed that with another composed performance against Tunisia last Saturday, completing 51 of 59 passes and contributing significantly to the build-up of Nigeria’s third goal in their 3–2 victory.
With 93 international appearances, the 29-year-old is the most capped player in the current Super Eagles squad and is featuring at his third Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria are targeting a fourth AFCON title, having previously lifted the trophy in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
