Hundreds of protesters, including members of both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), took to the streets of Port Harcourt on Monday to voice their opposition to the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5.

The demonstrators, carrying placards with various messages, converged on the PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt before marching along Azikiwe Road towards the Rivers State Government House. Their grievances were centered around concerns over the timing and fairness of the election, warning against what they described as a potential political crisis if the polls proceed.

The protest, which attracted a large crowd, prompted the deployment of heavy security in the area. Patrol vans from multiple security agencies were seen monitoring the procession to ensure the peaceful nature of the demonstration.

While details of the specific objections from both political parties remain unclear, the event signals growing tension over the impending elections, with stakeholders calling on the state government to reconsider its plans. Local residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the protest and others urging for the democratic process to proceed as scheduled.

No major incidents of violence were reported during the protest, though authorities have remained on high alert as the election date approaches.
