TikTok has agreed to resolve a lawsuit accusing major social media platforms of fostering addictive behavior, marking another legal settlement tied to growing concerns over digital dependency. Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat, also reached a settlement in the same case earlier this month.
The legal action was filed by a California woman identified as “K.G.M.,” who alleged that prolonged use of platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, Meta-owned services, and YouTube led to compulsive usage patterns that negatively affected her wellbeing. The lawsuit argued that platform designs intentionally encouraged excessive engagement.
TikTok finalized its settlement with the plaintiff’s legal team on Monday, January 26, following Snap Inc.’s agreement reached on January 20. Specific terms of both settlements were not disclosed publicly.
Reacting to the development, attorney Mark Lanier, who represents the plaintiff, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing it as a positive resolution to the case.
The settlements come amid heightened global scrutiny of social media companies and their responsibility toward user mental health, particularly as regulators and courts increasingly examine claims of platform-induced addiction.
