PDP Faces Critical Court Ruling Amid Leadership Dispute

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set for a defining moment as the Court of Appeal delivers a judgment today on a prolonged leadership dispute that has split the party. The case involves nine consolidated appeals filed by rival factions, each claiming to be the legitimate leadership.

The dispute centres on the validity of the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, which produced Tanimu Turaki as chairman. Lower courts had previously restrained the party from proceeding with the convention over alleged breaches of its constitution and legal procedures. The opposing faction is led by the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed.

The outcome of the Appeal Court ruling is expected to determine control of the party’s structure and its authority to nominate candidates ahead of political primaries scheduled between April 23 and May 30, 2026. Party observers warn that while the decision could stabilise the PDP, it also has the potential to deepen internal divisions, with the option of further appeal to the Supreme Court remaining. Meanwhile, the PDP Governors’ Forum has urged members and supporters to remain calm and respect the judicial process, regardless of the verdict.
