Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to protecting human rights and implementing International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Speaking at the 2026 High-Level International Humanitarian Law Dialogue, he said the Tinubu administration combines kinetic and non-kinetic measures to tackle insecurity. He also highlighted the recent domestication of the African Union Kampala Convention to protect Internally Displaced Persons.

VP Shettima outlined Nigeria’s proactive IHL approach, including military training, child protection protocols, integration into academic curricula, and accountability for sexual violence. He stressed that protecting civilians, ensuring humane treatment, and upholding human dignity are core priorities. He also commended the UN, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other partners for supporting Nigeria in translating international standards into practice.

Attorney General Chief Lateef Fagbemi and Solicitor General Mrs Beatrice Jeddy-Agba echoed the VP, noting efforts to strengthen the justice system, embed IHL in military and law enforcement training, and make humanitarian law accessible in local languages. The dialogue, attended by international bodies, underscores Nigeria’s resolve to uphold human rights and comply with the Geneva Conventions amid evolving security challenges.
