The Federal Government has called for enhanced collaboration among media organisations, government institutions, and key stakeholders to tackle the rising threat of disinformation and misinformation in the country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the call on Monday during the 2026 commemoration of World Press Freedom Day held at Radio House in Abuja.

Idris stressed that collective action is crucial to safeguarding public trust and maintaining national stability, noting that the current administration has prioritised partnerships with media stakeholders and international organisations to promote responsible journalism.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to press freedom, describing it as a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution. According to him, the government remains dedicated to ensuring that journalists operate in a safe and enabling environment, guided by democratic principles and the rule of law.

The Minister highlighted efforts by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to improve transparency and access to information through consistent media engagement, implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, and investments in public communication platforms.

He also referenced Nigeria’s collaboration with UNESCO in establishing the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI) in Abuja, describing it as a major step toward equipping citizens with critical information skills in the digital age.

Idris urged journalists to uphold professionalism, fairness, and ethical standards, noting that press freedom must be exercised with a strong sense of responsibility.

“The true test of press freedom lies not in our declarations, but in our actions—how safely journalists can do their work, how truthfully information is shared, and how responsibly it is consumed,” he said.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Binyerem Ukaire, described the event as an important platform for strengthening institutional collaboration and promoting an inclusive information environment.

She emphasised the need for coordinated responses to challenges arising from the rapidly evolving digital landscape, particularly the spread of misinformation, and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to fostering dialogue, partnerships, and professionalism within the media sector.
