The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has joined Nigerians in commemorating Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a defining moment in the nation’s democratic journey marked by courage, sacrifice, and the pursuit of justice and free elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the governor said the significance of June 12 lies in its recognition of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy advocates and the enduring legacy of M.K.O. Abiola, whose commitment to democratic ideals continues to inspire national unity and national development.

Abiodun also acknowledged former President Muhammadu Buhari for officially declaring June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, noting that the decision gave deserved recognition to Abiola and other heroes of the democratic struggle.

The governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting ongoing economic reforms and youth-focused initiatives, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which he said are creating greater opportunities for young Nigerians.

He urged citizens to remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting peace and security, and actively participating in nation-building, stressing that the sustainability of democracy depends on the collective efforts of all Nigerians.
