The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the protection, stability, and sustenance of the nation’s democratic system, stressing that the military remains firmly loyal to constitutional authority and civil governance.

Speaking during a formal military engagement in Abuja, General Oluyede emphasized that Nigeria’s Armed Forces will continue to operate strictly within the bounds of the Constitution, upholding democratic principles while fulfilling their primary mandate of defending the territorial integrity of the country.

He noted that the military’s role in a democratic society goes beyond conventional warfare, adding that modern security realities demand a more comprehensive approach that integrates professionalism, human security, and respect for fundamental human rights.

According to the CDS, the Armed Forces are undergoing continuous reforms and capacity-building efforts aimed at improving operational effectiveness, inter-agency coordination, and adherence to international standards of military conduct. He explained that these reforms are designed to ensure that troops remain responsive, disciplined, and fully prepared to address evolving security challenges across the country.

General Oluyede acknowledged that Nigeria continues to face complex and multi-dimensional security threats, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violent crime. He, however, assured Nigerians that the military is adapting strategically to these challenges through improved intelligence gathering, advanced training, and stronger collaboration with other security agencies.

He further stressed that the protection of civilians remains a central priority in all military operations. According to him, the Armed Forces are increasingly focused on human security, which places emphasis not only on defeating threats but also on safeguarding lives, protecting communities, and restoring normalcy in conflict-affected areas.

The CDS also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the military and civil institutions, noting that sustainable peace and democracy can only be achieved through collective national effort.

He called on stakeholders across government, civil society, and the private sector to support ongoing security initiatives and strengthen trust between the Armed Forces and the public.

In addition, General Oluyede underscored the significance of professionalism and ethical conduct within the military ranks. He reiterated that discipline, accountability, and respect for the rule of law remain non-negotiable values guiding the operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He also pointed out that Nigeria’s democracy has continued to endure despite significant security challenges, a development he attributed in part to the resilience of security institutions and the cooperation of citizens. He assured that the military remains committed to preserving that democratic stability.

The CDS further emphasized the importance of continuous training and education for military personnel, particularly in areas such as human rights law, conflict management, and civil-military relations. He said such training is essential to ensuring that troops operate effectively in complex environments while maintaining public confidence.

He reaffirmed that the Armed Forces will continue to collaborate with regional and international partners to enhance security capacity and intelligence sharing, particularly in addressing transnational threats that affect Nigeria and the broader West African region.

General Oluyede concluded by assuring Nigerians that the military remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities, stressing that democracy in Nigeria will continue to be protected and strengthened through professionalism, dedication, and unwavering service to the nation.
