The Federal Government has officially launched Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) platform, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition to modern digital broadcasting infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch ceremony held at the NIGCOMSAT Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the development as a historic step in the transformation of Nigeria’s broadcasting sector.

He said the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to drive digital transformation, strengthen national infrastructure, create jobs, and expand opportunities within the creative economy.

According to the Minister, the Digital Switch Over is not merely a technological upgrade but a strategic national investment aimed at improving access to information, enhancing content delivery, and supporting economic growth across the broadcasting value chain.

He explained that extensive stakeholder consultations had been held with broadcasters, regulators, manufacturers, signal distributors, and content creators, noting that there is broad consensus on the need for a hybrid broadcasting model combining Digital Terrestrial Television, satellite delivery, and digital platforms.

The Minister assured stakeholders that the Federal Government is committed to protecting investments made in the sector and ensuring that no stakeholder is left behind in the transition process.

He further stated that the DSO project is expected to create employment opportunities, strengthen local manufacturing, improve audience measurement systems, and increase revenue generation for broadcasters and content creators.

Idris also directed relevant agencies, including the National Broadcasting Commission and the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, to develop sustainable frameworks that will ensure long-term viability of the broadcasting industry.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous technology, supporting Nigerian content creators, and expanding participation of local businesses in the digital broadcasting ecosystem.

The Minister commended President Tinubu for his leadership and support, noting that the launch represents the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria’s broadcasting evolution rather than its conclusion.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that the Digital Switch Over platform will strengthen Nigeria’s media landscape and position the country for greater competitiveness in the global digital economy.
