The Nigerian Army has announced plans to recruit an additional 28,000 soldiers as part of efforts to strengthen its operational capacity and tackle the country’s growing security challenges.

The announcement was made on Friday during a press briefing ahead of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Policy and Plans, Major General Bamidele Alabi, said the recruitment drive would significantly boost the Army’s manpower in response to persistent threats across the country.

As part of the expansion, the Army has established a third recruit training depot in Amasiri Edda, Ebonyi State, aimed at increasing its capacity to train new personnel and improve force readiness.

Military authorities said the additional recruits would support ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and other forms of violent crime. The Army also disclosed that it has continued to establish new brigades and operational units while investing in modern equipment and enhancing troop welfare to improve operational effectiveness.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the Army said all operations would continue to be conducted in line with the Constitution, established rules of engagement, international humanitarian law, and human rights standards.

The recruitment is expected to strengthen the Army’s ability to respond to evolving security threats and reinforce ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across Nigeria. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
