A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a Boko Haram member, Alkali Yarima, also known as La’ari, to death by hanging for his involvement in the 2015 terrorist attack on Maiduguri, Borno State.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Friday after finding Yarima guilty of terrorism-related offences. In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed life imprisonment for receiving arms and weapons training to facilitate terrorist activities. The convict was also handed prison terms of 35 years, 30 years, and 10 years each on three other counts.

The sentences followed his conviction on a seven-count charge.

The Federal Government, through the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), had charged Yarima with being a member of the proscribed Boko Haram terrorist group between 2009 and 2015. Prosecutors also accused him of undergoing weapons training and participating in acts of terrorism during the insurgency.

The conviction is part of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to hold members of terrorist groups accountable for crimes committed during the Boko Haram insurgency, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people, particularly across the North-East.

The judgment marks another milestone in the country’s continued prosecution of terrorism-related offences and reinforces the government’s commitment to combating terrorism through the judicial process. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
