Sokoto Youths Demand Action on Insecurity, Shut Down Jega Highway

Residents of Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State took to the streets on Friday, blocking the Sokoto–Jega–Yauri highway in protest against the growing wave of insecurity and recurring bandit attacks in their communities.

The protesters, mostly youths, erected roadblocks with logs and set bonfires on the highway, disrupting traffic and leaving hundreds of motorists stranded for several hours. Security operatives later intervened, cleared the road, and restored the free flow of traffic.

The demonstration followed fresh attacks on villages within the local government area, where armed bandits reportedly killed several residents, abducted others, and forced many families to flee their homes. The displaced victims are said to be taking shelter in schools, mosques, markets, and with relatives in safer communities.

The protesters called on the federal and Sokoto State governments to intensify security operations and provide lasting protection for communities that have repeatedly come under attack.

Authorities have since deployed additional security personnel to the affected areas to maintain order and reassure residents.

Police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and express their grievances peacefully while investigations and security operations continue.

The protest underscores growing frustration among residents over the persistent security challenges facing parts of Sokoto State, where repeated attacks have continued to claim lives, destroy livelihoods, and displace hundreds of people. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
