Ogun State Govt Shuts Down School Following Student’s Death from Alleged Corporal Punishment

The Ogun State Government has ordered the closure of Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-Emi, following the tragic death of an SS2 student, Monday Arijo, reportedly due to corporal punishment administered by a teacher. The teacher involved has been arrested and suspended, and the school’s principal, Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been suspended for permitting corporal punishment, which is against state regulations.

Governor Dapo Abiodun directed the school’s closure and announced the formation of a panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding Arijo’s death. The governor assured that anyone found responsible following the investigation would face legal consequences.

Representatives from the state government, including officials from the Ministry of Education, visited Arijo’s family to offer condolences and gather initial information for the inquiry. The delegation, which included high-ranking education officers and union representatives, expressed deep sympathy to the family and pledged the government’s support. A condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000 were presented to the family as a gesture of compassion.

The state officials assured the family of a thorough investigation and reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing accountability in the tragic incident.
