Portugal recorded its hottest November on record, with the average air temperature 2.69°C above the 1981-2010 average, the country’s meteorological agency, IPMA, announced on Thursday. The average temperature for the month was 15.14°C (59.3°F), marking the warmest November since records began in 1931, according to a spokesperson for the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere. The institute plans to release a full report on the month’s data soon.

Similarly, Spain also experienced its warmest November on record, as reported by its meteorological agency earlier this week. The average temperature in Spain reached 12.4°C (54.3°F), surpassing the previous record set in 1983 by 0.5°C. This follows severe flooding in October and reflects broader warming trends.

Both Portugal and Spain have endured their second-hottest years on record in 2023. Scientists warn that rising global temperatures driven by climate change are making extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires, more frequent and severe.
