Argentina Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia has described Lionel Messi as “eternal” in an emotional tribute following Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Messi, 39, made history by becoming the first player to start in three FIFA World Cup finals. Although he was unable to inspire Argentina to back-to-back world titles, he finished the tournament with an impressive eight goals and four assists.
In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Tapia praised Messi’s immense contribution to Argentine football, thanking him for his leadership, commitment and unforgettable achievements with the national team.
There are no words to express our gratitude for everything you have given us.
Thank you for your football, your leadership and for teaching an entire nation to dream and fight until the very last second,” Tapia wrote.
Messi left the stadium without speaking to reporters after earning his 205th appearance for Argentina, fuelling speculation that Sunday’s final could have been his last match for the national team.
The Inter Miami forward led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title and Copa América victories in 2021 and 2024. He has now scored 125 international goals, making him the second-highest goalscorer in men’s international football.
Tapia also praised head coach Lionel Scaloni for his dedication to the national team and commended goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who made 11 saves against Spain, the most ever recorded in a World Cup final.
