Vice President Kashim Shettima has reminded South Africa of Nigeria’s historic support during the anti-apartheid struggle, stating that Nigerian students made significant sacrifices by contributing to the country’s liberation through a special education levy.

Speaking amid renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, Shettima said the contributions of Nigerian students and citizens reflected the country’s unwavering commitment to the freedom and emancipation of Africans.

He stressed that the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and South Africa should be strengthened through mutual respect, solidarity and the protection of all African citizens living and working across the continent.

The Vice President called on South African authorities to take decisive measures against xenophobic violence and ensure the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to African unity, urging both countries to preserve the shared legacy of cooperation built during the struggle against apartheid.
