The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has intensified military operations in Katsina State with the launch of Operation Clean Sweep III, following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was killed while in captivity after being abducted alongside his wife.
The military described the operation as a renewed and strengthened offensive aimed at dismantling bandit and terrorist networks operating across Katsina and other parts of the North-West region.
According to the DHQ, additional operational assets have been deployed to support ongoing counter-insurgency and rescue missions in affected communities.
Major General Abubakar (rtd.), a former Director of Defence Information, was abducted in late May 2026 while travelling in Katsina State. Despite search-and-rescue efforts by security forces, he was later confirmed dead while in captivity.
His death has been widely described as a national tragedy, with military authorities and government officials expressing condolences to his family and the Armed Forces. The DHQ reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the abduction and killing are tracked down and brought to justice.
Although operational details remain classified, the military stated that Operation Clean Sweep III is designed to disrupt criminal strongholds, enhance civilian protection, and restore stability in communities affected by recurring attacks.
The retired general has since been laid to rest in Katsina according to Islamic rites, with senior military officers, government representatives, and family members in attendance. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
