The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has praised former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, describing him as a courageous and selfless leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic transition remain one of the country’s most enduring legacies.

Akpabio made the remarks at the “General Abdulsalami Abubakar @84: Legacy of a Statesman” event held in Abuja, where dignitaries gathered to celebrate the former military leader’s life and service to the nation.

He commended Abdulsalami’s pivotal role in overseeing Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999, noting that his leadership during the transition period helped stabilize the country at a critical moment in its history.

According to the Senate President, Abdulsalami’s decision to hand over power to a civilian government demonstrated uncommon courage, patriotism, and a commitment to national unity above personal interest.

The event formed part of activities marking the former Head of State’s 84th birthday and the presentation of books in his honour, attracting top political leaders, former presidents, and international dignitaries.
