Portugal were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against DR Congo in their opening Group K match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the European giants were frustrated by a disciplined and resilient African side.
Portugal started brightly and took the lead in the 6th minute through João Neves, finishing off a well-worked move early in the match. However, despite dominating possession, they were unable to convert their control into a second goal.
DR Congo grew into the contest and produced a composed defensive display before striking back just before half-time. Yoane Wissa powered in the equaliser from close range, marking DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal and shifting the momentum of the match.
In the second half, Portugal pressed for a winner but struggled to break through a compact Congolese defence. Cristiano Ronaldo, playing at a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance, was largely contained and missed two clear chances as Portugal failed to find a breakthrough.
DR Congo nearly snatched a famous victory late on when Cédric Bakambu struck the post, but both sides ultimately settled for a point apiece.
The result leaves Portugal under early pressure in the group stage, while DR Congo will take confidence from a historic and hard-earned opening performance on the world stage.
