The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday experienced a tense moment following a heated exchange between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole over recently amended Senate standing rules.

The altercation began during plenary when Akpabio was presenting the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting. Senator Oshiomhole attempted to raise a point of order but was ruled out of order by the Senate President, who cited provisions of the Senate rules that prohibit such interventions at that stage of proceedings.

Despite repeated cautions, Oshiomhole persisted in his attempt to speak, prompting interventions from other lawmakers who supported the Senate President’s position.

Tension escalated when Akpabio issued a warning, stating that the Senate would not tolerate actions capable of disrupting proceedings, and hinted at possible disciplinary measures if order was not maintained.

The situation is linked to recent amendments to Senate rules, which have generated debate among lawmakers over leadership eligibility and internal procedures within the chamber.

After several minutes of disruption, calm was eventually restored, and the Senate continued with its legislative business.
