Former Benue State Secretary to the Government (SSG), Prof. David Salifu, has died after succumbing to gunshot injuries sustained during an attack by suspected kidnappers along the Wukari–Makurdi highway.

Prof. Salifu, who served under the administration of former Governor Gabriel Suswam, was travelling from Wukari, Taraba State, to Makurdi on Thursday when armed men reportedly intercepted his vehicle. According to sources, the attackers attempted to abduct him but opened fire, leaving him with critical gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment and later transferred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he died in the early hours of Friday.

The late professor, who was also a lecturer at the Federal University, Wukari, was widely respected for his contributions to public service and academia. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief from political leaders, colleagues, friends and family members.

The Benue State Government described Prof. Salifu as a dedicated public servant whose legacy in governance and education would be remembered. Several political associates and community leaders have also paid tribute to the former SSG while calling for justice and improved security across the region.

The incident has renewed concerns over the persistent insecurity along major highways in Nigeria’s North-Central region, with residents urging security agencies to intensify efforts to curb violent attacks and protect commuters. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
