The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of a senior police team alongside specialised tactical units to Plateau State following renewed waves of violent attacks in several communities across the state.
The directive, announced by the Nigeria Police Force, includes the deployment of an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) who will oversee coordinated security operations in the affected areas.
The operation also involves the mobilisation of elite tactical teams, intelligence officers, and rapid response units tasked with restoring stability and preventing further escalation of violence.
According to the police authorities, the decision was taken in response to recent killings that have resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of residents in parts of Plateau State. The attacks, which have sparked fear and tension among communities, are part of a recurring pattern of insecurity that has affected several local government areas in the state over time.
The Nigeria Police Force stated that the newly deployed security assets will work closely with other security agencies, including the military and local intelligence networks, to ensure a coordinated and intelligence-driven response to the situation. The objective, according to the statement, is to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks, dismantle criminal networks operating in the region, and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The IGP further directed that the operation should be conducted with professionalism, respect for human rights, and adherence to operational guidelines. He emphasized that officers involved in the deployment must ensure that innocent civilians are protected while sustained efforts are made to bring perpetrators to justice.
In addition to the tactical deployment, security surveillance in vulnerable communities is expected to be intensified.
Patrols will be increased, checkpoints strengthened, and intelligence gathering improved in order to detect and respond quickly to any emerging threats. The police also indicated that aerial and ground reconnaissance may be utilised where necessary to enhance situational awareness in hard-to-reach areas.
The IGP expressed deep condolences to families who have lost loved ones in the recent attacks, describing the incidents as tragic and unacceptable. He reassured residents of Plateau State that the Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to restoring peace and stability in the region.
He also called on community leaders, traditional rulers, and youth groups to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and operations.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid actions that could further heighten tensions or lead to reprisals. The police stressed the importance of unity and collaboration between citizens and security forces in addressing the root causes of insecurity.
Meanwhile, stakeholders in Plateau State have continued to express concern over the recurring nature of violent incidents in the region, calling for more sustainable solutions beyond immediate security deployments. Many have advocated for improved community engagement, conflict resolution mechanisms, and long-term investment in peacebuilding initiatives to address underlying grievances that often fuel unrest.
The deployment of the AIG-led tactical team is part of broader efforts by the federal government to strengthen internal security and ensure the protection of lives and property across the country.
Authorities maintain that with intensified operations and improved intelligence coordination, there will be a significant reduction in violent incidents in the affected areas.
The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to restore lasting peace in Plateau State and ensure that residents can return to their normal daily activities without fear of attack. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
