
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased support, protection, and economic empowerment for widows across Nigeria, Africa, and the world.
In a message marking International Widows’ Day 2026, Senator Tinubu urged governments, institutions, and communities to reaffirm their commitment to the welfare of widows while reflecting on this year’s theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows – The African Perspectives.”
She stressed that widows deserve to live free from discrimination, harmful practices, poverty, and social exclusion, noting that their rights must be protected through laws and policies that guarantee justice and equal opportunities.
The First Lady also emphasized the need to eliminate harmful traditional practices that dehumanize widows in many African societies, calling for greater compassion, inclusion, and support systems to help them rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
According to her, empowering widows through education, economic opportunities, and social support will enable them to provide for their families and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu wished widows around the world a meaningful International Widows’ Day and reaffirmed her commitment to promoting policies and initiatives that improve their welfare.
