The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has directed traditional worshippers across Edo South Senatorial District to embark on a week-long spiritual exercise aimed at combating banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes in Edo State.
The monarch gave the directive during a meeting with native doctors, priests, and priestesses at his palace in Benin City, describing the initiative as a form of “spiritual warfare” to complement government efforts in addressing the worsening security situation. According to the Oba, the instruction was inspired by divine guidance and the counsel of royal ancestors amid growing concerns over insecurity in the state.
Oba Ewuare II urged traditional practitioners not to relent in their spiritual responsibilities, stressing that criminal activities must not be allowed to thrive in Edo. The exercise is expected to culminate on July 2 at the Benin Palace, where traditional rites and pronouncements against perpetrators of violent crimes and their collaborators will be conducted.
The traditional ruler maintained that the spiritual intervention is intended to support ongoing security operations and reinforce efforts to restore peace across the state.
Palace officials also disclosed that consultations and coordinated traditional measures have been intensified in response to the security challenges.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has announced plans to establish special courts to fast-track the prosecution of kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related offences, and ritual crimes. Authorities believe the move will strengthen deterrence and accelerate justice for victims.
The development comes amid increasing reports of kidnapping and violent crimes in parts of Edo State, prompting both traditional and government institutions to seek additional measures to curb insecurity and protect residents. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
