Troops of Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA have recorded significant successes in ongoing counterterrorism operations across Sokoto and Katsina states, neutralising suspected terrorists, rescuing abductees, and recovering weapons and rustled livestock.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the operations were carried out as part of sustained efforts to combat terrorism and banditry in Nigeria’s North-West region.

The first operation took place on June 21, when armed terrorists reportedly attempted to infiltrate Tureta town in Sokoto State. Acting on credible intelligence, troops swiftly responded and engaged the attackers, forcing them to abandon the operation and flee.

Military authorities said aerial surveillance later tracked the fleeing suspects to Sulubawa Gidan Kare village, where they were seen moving with abducted civilians and rustled livestock.

Troops subsequently launched a pursuit operation but encountered an ambush mounted by the retreating terrorists.

Despite the resistance, the soldiers overpowered the attackers, forcing them to disperse.
The operation resulted in the successful rescue of the abductees, recovery of the stolen livestock, and seizure of two motorcycles allegedly used by the terrorists.

In a separate operation during the early hours of June 22, troops conducted an intelligence-led raid on a suspected terrorist hideout in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The military said the surprise assault overwhelmed the suspects, leading to the killing of two terrorists, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Items recovered from the hideout included one PKT assault rifle, one AK-47 rifle with ammunition, three motorcycles, mobile communication devices, rustled livestock and other logistical materials.

The Joint Task Force said the latest operations demonstrate the commitment and resolve of Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops to dismantle terrorist networks and restore peace across the North-West.

“The aggressive operations will be sustained to deny terrorist and criminal elements freedom of action and ensure lasting peace and security in the region,” the statement added.
