President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mr. Rilwan Lanre Babalola as Special Adviser to the President on Power and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power Sector Reset and Restoration.

The Presidency said the appointment is part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s electricity sector and improve power supply across the country.

According to the statement, the President also redesignated the Office of the Special Adviser (Energy) as the Special Adviser (Oil & Gas) to streamline responsibilities and avoid duplication within the energy governance structure.

Babalola, a former Minister for Power, is expected to lead reforms aimed at restoring efficiency, discipline, and commercial viability in the sector through the newly established presidential task force.

The task force will operate under a direct presidential mandate and coordinate with relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to drive reforms in the electricity value chain.

Its responsibilities include implementing a “Performance Before Expansion” framework, reducing technical and commercial losses, strengthening tariff integrity, improving sector liquidity, restoring grid discipline, and developing Electricity Growth Zones.

The task force is also expected to deliver a 90-day implementation blueprint as part of efforts to achieve measurable improvements in power sector performance under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
