Mufasa: The Lion King” Leads the Weekend with $23.8 Million

Disney’s animated drama Mufasa: The Lion King dominated North America’s box office over the weekend, earning $23.8 million, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations. The film, directed by Barry Jenkins, surpassed Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to claim the top spot and has now grossed $168.6 million domestically over three weekends. Internationally, the prequel has brought in $307 million, putting it on course to reach the half-billion-dollar mark.

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which follows the adventures of the speedy blue hedgehog, secured second place with $21.2 million. The action-comedy has accumulated $187.5 million domestically and $148 million overseas, bringing its global total to $333.5 million.

In third place, Focus Film’s vampire drama Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 silent classic, earned $13.2 million. The film, inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, continues to draw in audiences with its gothic horror appeal.

Dropping to fourth place was Disney’s Moana 2, which earned $12.4 million. With a total of $960 million in global ticket sales ($425 million domestic, $535 million international), the animated sequel is nearing the $1 billion milestone and is close to surpassing Despicable Me 4 as the third top-grossing release of 2024.

Universal’s Wicked, a musical fantasy set in the magical world of Oz, rounded out the top five with $10.2 million. Despite becoming available on-demand, the film has maintained strong ticket sales.
