The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s decision not to approve a 100% increase in telecom tariffs despite ongoing demands from telecom companies.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Tijani acknowledged that a tariff review is overdue, given the rising operational costs, inflation, and naira devaluation cited by operators. However, he stated that a 100% hike would be detrimental to the Nigerian populace.
“We have made it clear that a 100% increase will not be approved. Telecom companies believe this level of adjustment is necessary to stabilize the sector, but allowing such an increase would harm Nigerians,” Tijani explained.
When asked about the potential range for a tariff increase, the Minister suggested a more modest adjustment. “I think it should not be more than anywhere between 30 to 60%,” he said.
Tijani emphasized the critical role of the telecom sector in driving economic growth and reiterated the government’s commitment to balancing the needs of the industry with the welfare of citizens.
“While we recognize the financial pressures faced by telecom operators, we also have a responsibility to protect Nigerians from excessive costs. This sector is crucial for our country’s development, and any changes must prioritize the people,” he added.
