Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art fire service headquarters in Port Harcourt, reinforcing the government’s commitment to disaster prevention and emergency response. The newly established facility, equipped with advanced fire-fighting trucks and equipment, is expected to enhance fire safety and emergency response across the state.
Speaking at the commissioning event held at the Rivers State Fire Service Headquarters by Isaac Boro Park Flyover in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Governor Fubara emphasized that the modernized fire station would significantly reduce fire-related disasters and ensure swift intervention in emergencies.
Enhancing Fire Safety in Rivers State
Governor Fubara acknowledged the state’s previous dependence on multinational companies for fire response, which often led to severe consequences. He recalled past incidents where inadequate fire services resulted in catastrophic losses, including the destruction of the Mile One Market and the Fruit Garden Market.
He stated: “We lost the Mile One Market because we couldn’t respond adequately. We lost, even what we call the Fruit Garden Market because we could not respond. Are we talking about houses and lives that have been lost in this state because of inadequate fire service?”
He further reiterated that governance is about providing essential services that protect lives and property, stressing that his administration remains committed to delivering impactful projects.
Proactive Fire Response Now in Place
Highlighting the government’s progress, Governor Fubara referenced a recent incident where a tanker fell along the Woji-Elelenwo Road. Unlike in the past, the Rivers State Fire Service promptly responded, averting a major disaster without relying on multinationals.
He said: “Some days ago, a tanker fell along the Woji-Elelenwo Road. If it were before, lives would have been lost. However, immediately, the fire service—not the multinationals—responded and arrested the situation. What else are we talking about?”
Commitment to Public Safety and Infrastructure Development
Governor Fubara assured the people of Rivers State that his administration remains focused on providing essential services, irrespective of political distractions.
“We are not interested whether those people who are commissioned to undermine us are unhappy, that is not our business. Our business is about Rivers State and Rivers people,” he stated.
The governor commended the Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Sam Anya, for overseeing the project’s successful execution. He also urged personnel to maintain the fire station and its equipment to ensure long-term efficiency.
First Major Fire Service Upgrade Since the 1960s
Providing further insight into the project, Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Samuel Anya, noted that this marks the first major upgrade of the fire service since the 1960s. The new facility now includes a gym, a sick bay, administrative offices, and cutting-edge fire-fighting equipment.
Dr. Anya stated: “We have a gym, sick bay, offices, and state-of-the-art equipment that we will use to combat fire. Your Excellency, we also have new fire trucks that you have acquired. Before now, we did not have any trucks, and when incidents happened, we had to call the Federal Fire Service or call Agip or Shell Fire Service. But thank God that His Excellency, in his wisdom, has given us a state-of-the-art facility, and we don’t need to call any other person again.”
A New Era for Fire Safety in Rivers State
Head of Local Government Administration, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Mr. Clifford Paul, praised Governor Fubara’s leadership, highlighting that the transformation of the fire service station represents a significant step toward strengthening disaster response capabilities in the state.
With this modern facility in place, the Rivers State Government has taken a proactive stance in protecting lives and property, ensuring that future fire incidents are swiftly and effectively managed.
