The Nigerian Navy says it has destroyed a suspected militant camp in the Soku area of Rivers State during an intelligence-driven operation aimed at preventing criminal groups from establishing new operational bases in the Niger Delta.
The Navy, in a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the operation was launched following intelligence indicating that a suspected militant group had relocated from the Nembe area to Soku.
According to the statement, personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH stormed the location, where they discovered evidence of recent human activity. The operatives recovered communication devices, accessories and about 150 metres of four-inch industrial hose believed to be intended for illegal oil bunkering before destroying the camp.
The Navy said preliminary intelligence linked the suspected group to kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, sea robbery and other maritime crimes within the Niger Delta region.
It added that the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to deny criminal elements safe havens, safeguard critical oil and gas infrastructure, and enhance security across Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The Navy also stated that investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend those behind the suspected criminal activities. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
