I Remain a Legitimate Senator Despite ‘Illegal’ Suspension – Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, has strongly rejected her six-month suspension from the Senate, asserting that she remains a legitimate senator despite what she describes as an “illegal” action.

In a statement addressing the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan criticized the decision, arguing that it violates fundamental principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity.

“Against the culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming, my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity,” she stated.

“The illegal suspension does not withdraw my legitimacy as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027 and beyond.”

Background on the Suspension

The Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following allegations of sexual harassment she made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The suspension was announced during Thursday’s plenary session after a recommendation from the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

As a result of the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan will lose her salary, security details, and access to the National Assembly premises. Additionally, her office will be sealed, and her legislative aides will not receive their salaries throughout the suspension period.

The Senate further ruled out reconsidering her suspension until the six-month term ends or she issues a formal apology.

Political Tensions and Fallout

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension has stirred political tension in Kogi Central, with some stakeholders threatening to initiate a recall process. Meanwhile, other lawmakers, including Senator Orji Kalu, have advocated for legislative aides to continue receiving their salaries despite the suspension.

This development has sparked widespread debate on the implications of the Senate’s decision, with many questioning whether it sets a precedent for political retribution in the legislature.

What’s Next?

With her suspension in place, political observers and analysts will be watching closely to see if Akpoti-Uduaghan takes legal action or leverages public support to challenge the Senate’s decision. The coming months will likely determine the broader political consequences of this suspension for both the senator and her party.
