The candid revelations by King Charles III and the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, about their cancer battles have sparked a wave of openness and support among fellow sufferers, according to Maggie’s, one of the UK’s leading cancer support charities.
The public learned in early 2024 that both the 76-year-old monarch and his daughter-in-law, 43, were undergoing treatment for cancer—news that stunned the nation. Yet, their decision to speak honestly about their diagnosis and recovery has had a “profound impact,” especially on encouraging others to share their experiences, Maggie’s says.
Laura Lee, Chief Executive of Maggie’s, noted a significant shift in how people—particularly men—are engaging with cancer support services since the royals went public with their diagnoses.
“For the King, talking as a man and talking about living with ongoing cancer treatment has helped men talk about cancer,” Lee told Reuters. “We saw last year a 12% increase in men coming into Maggie’s Centres directly as a result of the King being open about his diagnosis.”
Princess Kate’s own openness has also deeply resonated, especially with people navigating life after treatment. Though now in remission, Kate has spoken frankly about the emotional toll and the lingering effects of cancer therapy. Earlier this month, she revealed she had often “put on a brave face,” describing the experience as a “rollercoaster.”
That message struck a chord with Tracey Bradshaw, 56, who is currently under surveillance following treatment for bladder cancer in 2021. Speaking at a Maggie’s Centre in west London, Bradshaw said: “I felt exactly the same as she did. It’s the aftermath when the appointments start to trail off… You don’t see that lovely clinical nurse specialist that you absolutely adore… and I really identified with that.”
While King Charles has resumed public duties, he remains under medical treatment. Princess Kate’s schedule is being carefully managed as she continues to prioritise her recovery and family.
Medical professionals and support organisations have widely praised both royals for their transparency, calling it a powerful example of leadership and humanity in the face of illness.
“By sharing their journeys, they’ve opened the door for thousands to talk about something that is often still surrounded by fear and silence,” Lee said. “That kind of visibility matters—it reminds people they are not alone.
