The Kaduna State Police Command has halted a planned rally by supporters of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, citing security concerns. The rally, intended to celebrate Obi’s birthday, was scheduled to take place in the state.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the police explained that intelligence reports indicated potential infiltration by criminal elements aiming to disrupt the event, incite violence, and disturb public peace. Consequently, all political rallies and public gatherings remain suspended until the official commencement of political activities as defined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The police further noted that the proposed rally coincided with party primaries scheduled by INEC, which could lead to overlapping events, increasing the risk of tensions and potential clashes. To prevent such occurrences, the Command has advised organizers to cancel any gatherings or processions related to the rally.
While acknowledging the right of individuals to associate and celebrate their political leaders, the police emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order. They warned that any individual or group found violating the directive would face legal consequences.
The situation underscores ongoing concerns about political tensions and the need for adherence to legal frameworks governing public gatherings in the state.
