The Ogun State Government has issued a stern warning that anyone caught engaging in open grazing in the state will face a minimum of three years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine. The offenders will also forfeit any cattle or livestock used in violation of the law.
The state’s position was reaffirmed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, who stressed that the Animal Grazing Regulation and Cattle Ranch Establishment Law, enacted in July 2021, will be enforced to the letter.
Akinmade noted that the government’s renewed stance followed recent incidents of cattle obstructing traffic and encroaching on farmlands across the state, a situation he described as unacceptable.
“The law prohibiting open grazing in Ogun State is still in effect. Anyone who violates it will face the full weight of the law. This administration will not compromise the safety of lives and property,” Akinmade said.
The government said the measure is aimed at preventing violent clashes between farmers and herders while promoting modern and regulated ranching practices in the state.
