The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the Kaduna–Kano standard gauge rail segment, part of the broader Lagos–Kano rail modernization project, is scheduled for completion by 2026. Transport Minister Senator Said Alkali made the announcement during a meeting with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, reaffirming President Tinubu’s commitment to upgrading critical infrastructure across the nation .

The 203 km Kaduna–Kano line is a key component of the envisioned 1,343 km Lagos–Kano corridor that will eventually link the country’s commercial hub to the northern border regions. The project, being delivered under an EPC+F (Engineering, Procurement, Construction + Financing) framework, will enhance mobility, support regional integration, and bolster economic activities along its path . Notably, funding has been secured from the China Development Bank, which has approved $255 million toward the rails’ construction .

The Minister also highlighted that Nigeria is concurrently working to finalize the Kano–Maradi railway corridor, including extensions to Dutse and Daura, which are also expected to be commissioned by 2026. These lines aim to further facilitate trade between Nigeria and Niger Republic while relieving pressure on road networks across the region .
