Tension is mounting in Nigeria’s aviation sector as four major unions have issued a joint strike notice to the Federal Government, warning of a complete withdrawal of services starting Monday, August 11, 2025. The unions — Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, National Union of Air Transport Employees, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations — are protesting the government’s failure to implement a new salary structure for staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) despite concluding negotiations eight months ago.
In their letter, the unions gave a seven-day notice beginning Thursday, July 31, with a strict directive that all NAMA personnel cease operations by 5:00 a.m. on the strike date. They stressed that unless the salary adjustment is implemented, the action will persist indefinitely. The unions also notified all airlines, aviation service providers, and the flying public to prepare for major disruptions and consider alternative travel arrangements ahead of the shutdown.
The notice, which was formally addressed to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and other top aviation authorities, warns that the strike could paralyze all flight operations nationwide. With no resolution in sight, the looming industrial action threatens to ground Nigeria’s aviation industry, severely impacting local and international travel, commerce, and public mobility.
