Barcelona Strip Ter Stegen of Captaincy Amid Fitness Dispute

Barcelona have removed Marc-André ter Stegen as first-team captain amid an ongoing row over the German goalkeeper’s fitness status, the club confirmed on Thursday.

“In light of disciplinary proceedings initiated against Marc-André ter Stegen, and until they are resolved, the club has decided to temporarily remove him from his captaincy duties,” read a statement. Vice-captain Ronald Araújo will take over the role.

Local media report the dispute stems from Ter Stegen’s refusal to cooperate with La Liga’s attempt to classify him as a long-term injury absentee — a move that would allow Barça to reduce his salary from their official wage bill.

With the new season fast approaching, the Catalan giants are again struggling to meet Spain’s financial fair play rules, putting the registration of new signings at risk.

The 33-year-old, sidelined by back surgery in July, has declined to sign a form granting La Liga access to his medical records. His absence opens the door for summer recruit Joan García, 24, and veteran Wojciech Szczęsny, 35, who was handed a contract extension after helping secure last season’s league title.

Ter Stegen, the last remaining member of Luis Enrique’s 2015 Champions League-winning side, could face severe sanctions under La Liga rules — including the possible termination of his contract.
