Human rights activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has been released from police custody, days after his arrest sparked nationwide outrage. The former presidential candidate confirmed his release in a post on X on Friday, accusing the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police of “unjust, unwarranted, and unlawful detention.”
While expressing gratitude to supporters and allies who campaigned for his freedom, Sowore insisted that his release was “nothing to celebrate,” stressing that the fight for justice in Nigeria was far from over. “The Nigeria Police Force and its illegal IGP have capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement… You’ve all seen the power of unity,” he wrote.
Sowore’s detention had drawn condemnation from the Nigeria Labour Congress, Amnesty International, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who all described the arrest as an attack on free speech and a sign of creeping authoritarianism.
