President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Governing Council and Board of Trustees of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYREP). The Minister of Environment will serve as Chairman of the Governing Council, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges caused by hydrocarbon pollution in the Niger Delta and Ogoniland regions.
The newly constituted Council includes representatives from diverse stakeholder groups. Loanyie Barituka Victor will represent non-governmental organizations focused on the environment, while Bright Onyebuchi Jacob and Henry Obiabure represent Niger Delta communities. Professor Barinedum Michael Nwibere and Barrister Baride Abdul Gwezia have been appointed to represent the Ogoni community. Furthermore, the nine oil-producing states have two representatives on the Council: Gideon Onyebuwa Melfor and Dr. Ibikunle Omotehinse. Four alternate members also serve, with Rev. Canon Dr. Abraham Olungwe and Engineer Maeba Power Ekpobari representing Ogoniland, and Joseph Akedesuo alongside Beauty Warejuowei representing the Niger Delta.
In addition to the Governing Council, President Tinubu reconstituted the HYREP Board of Trustees, with Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah reappointed as chairman. The Board also includes Fred Mbombo Igwe and Dr. Fred Barivule Kpakol as representatives of the Ogoni communities and stakeholders. Mrs. Dorcas Amos represents other Niger Delta communities, while Chief Jide Damazio, also reappointed, represents environmental non-governmental organizations.
This reconstitution is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and oversight of HYREP. It reflects a renewed focus on tackling the environmental degradation caused by oil pollution, ensuring accountability, and promoting sustainable remediation activities in affected areas.
