The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has partnered with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) to launch a nationwide strategy aimed at improving soil health and raising farmers’ incomes.
Central to the plan is the Nigerian Soil Information System (NSIS), a digital platform providing detailed soil data to help farmers make informed decisions on crop choice, fertilizer use, and irrigation. The initiative also includes the Nigerian Farmers’ Soil Health Scheme (NFSHS), offering site-specific fertilizer recommendations and promoting climate-smart, regenerative farming.
The government will establish 774 soil testing laboratories one in each Local Government Area to ensure easy access to testing services. Additional measures include digital agriculture advisory services, seasonal climate forecasts in collaboration with NiMET, and expanded mechanisation and training for youth and women.
Officials say the approach will strengthen food security, protect the environment, and boost rural livelihoods.
